Record Review - The Hartford Courant

Chris Knight has sympathy for those who've had doors slammed in their faces. He is a songwriter comfortable with hard-hitting musical narratives, detailing folks on the receiving end of disappointment. With two solid albums behind him, Knight continues to move forward with his latest heartfelt collection, "A Jealous Kind."

The album benefits from the assistance of producer and former Georgia Satellite Dan Baird as Knight adds a little more guitar crunch to his Kentucky twang. Many of the tracks invoke archetypal images of cars while Knight writing about the desperate characters that take up space and heartache in his songs. Whether it's the man seeking redemption in the long black Coupe Deville in "Devil Behind the Wheel" or the troubled guy running from the law in the title track, Knight's men and women are filled up on broken dreams and enough gas to make it to another town.

The songs ring true and effective thanks to Knight's authentic, husky voice - think Steve Earle without the soapbox under his boots. The characters on this moving album don't talk out of both sides if their mouth. They're straightforward and honest in an often dishonest and dirty world.
